For SUP boards, PVC wins on cost, weight, printability, and RF-weldable automation — a 1,680 DTEX three-layer coated marine PVC with UV stabilizers is the industry standard. Hypalon/CSM resists sunlight and chemicals longer but costs roughly 3–5× more, is heavier, and is hand-glued, which makes it rare on SUPs today.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
PVC is the standard fabric for inflatable SUP boards. For board construction it is typically reinforced with a polyester scrim (1,100 – 1,680 DTEX) and coated on both sides, then fusion-welded around a drop-stitch core. Modern marine PVC formulations include UV stabilizers and plasticizers to improve flexibility and weather resistance, and boards built this way hold working pressures of 12 – 15 PSI.
Hypalon (CSM – Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene)
Hypalon is a synthetic rubber compound (now produced generically as CSM after DuPont discontinued the Hypalon trademark). It is renowned for exceptional UV and ozone resistance, making it the preferred fabric for professional and commercial inflatable boat tubes that spend extended periods in direct sunlight. On SUP boards, Hypalon is rarely used — boards demand high-pressure, dimensionally stable decks that PVC and drop-stitch construction deliver at a fraction of the weight.

- Abrasion from sand, concrete, or docks is a primary concern
Manufacturing Differences
PVC boards are manufactured using RF (radio frequency) welding or hot air welding, which creates a molecular bond between the coated fabric layers. This allows for automated, consistent production with high throughput, and precise seam strength on high-pressure boards. Hypalon is assembled using hand-gluing with contact cement; each seam is manually rolled and pressed, making Hypalon production more labor-intensive and suited to low-pressure tube construction.
