Two Paths to Market
When launching an inflatable SUP brand, one of the first decisions is whether to use a private label or OEM manufacturing approach. Both have advantages, and the right choice depends on your budget, timeline, brand ambitions, and risk tolerance.
Private Label Manufacturing
Private label means selecting existing board designs from a manufacturer's catalog and adding your brand's graphics, logo, and packaging.
Best for: First-time brand owners, small-batch launches, and businesses testing a new market.
<table> <thead> <tr> <th>Aspect</th> <th>Private Label</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td> <strong>MOQ</strong> </td> <td>50 units per model (5–10 pcs trial orders available)</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Lead time</strong> </td> <td>6–9 weeks (sample 7–12 days + production 25–35 days)</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Design control</strong> </td> <td>Surface graphics only (deck pad, color, logo)</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Upfront cost</strong> </td> <td>Low (no mold fees)</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Per-unit cost</strong> </td> <td>Higher (standard catalog pricing)</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Exclusivity</strong> </td> <td>Limited — competitor may sell same board</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Risk</strong> </td> <td>Low — proven designs, fast market entry</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>
OEM Manufacturing
OEM (original equipment manufacturing) means the manufacturer builds boards to your specifications — custom dimensions, shape, materials, and performance characteristics.
Best for: Established brands, unique product concepts, and businesses building long-term brand equity.
<table> <thead> <tr> <th>Aspect</th> <th>OEM</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td> <strong>MOQ</strong> </td> <td>200 units per model</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Lead time</strong> </td> <td>9–12 weeks first order (tooling +15–20 days); 6–9 weeks reorders</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Design control</strong> </td> <td>Full — shape, rocker, thickness, rail profile, materials</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Upfront cost</strong> </td> <td>Higher ($3K–$10K per mold)</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Per-unit cost</strong> </td> <td>Lower (negotiated pricing, exclusive molds)</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Exclusivity</strong> </td> <td>Full — your design is proprietary</td> </tr> <tr> <td> <strong>Risk</strong> </td> <td>Higher — requires design validation, longer time to market</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>
Decision Framework
Choose private label if:
- Your budget is under $20,000 for your first inventory order
- You need to be in market within 8 weeks
- You want to validate demand before investing in custom tooling
- You are a retailer, rental operator, or distributor adding a house brand
Choose OEM if:
- You have a unique board design or performance requirement
- You plan to build a long-term brand with proprietary products
- Your budget allows for mold investment ($3K–$10K+ per mold)
- You need exclusive rights to your product design
- You have a minimum first order quantity of 200+ units
The Hybrid Approach: Private Label First, Then OEM
Many successful SUP brands start with private label to establish distribution and validate their market, then transition to OEM as volumes grow:
- Year 1: Launch 1–2 private label models. Build brand awareness, retail relationships, and online presence.
- Year 2–3: Introduce 1 OEM flagship model. Use customer feedback to design a board that fills a gap in your line.
- Year 3+: Expand OEM lineup as private label models phase out. Your brand becomes known for proprietary designs.
Cost Comparison Example
For a standard all-round 10'6" SUP board:
<table> <thead> <tr> <th>Cost Item</th> <th>Private Label</th> <th>OEM (Custom Mold)</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>Mold tooling</td> <td>$0</td> <td>$5,000–$8,000</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Per-unit cost (500 units)</td> <td>$85–$120</td> <td>$65–$95</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Total first order (500 units)</td> <td>$42,500–$60,000</td> <td>$37,500–$55,500</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Time to market</td> <td>6–9 weeks</td> <td>9–12 weeks</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Brand differentiation</td> <td>Low (shared design)</td> <td>High (proprietary)</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>
While OEM has a higher upfront cost due to mold tooling, the per-unit savings typically offset the mold investment within the first 300–500 units — and the brand owns a unique product forever.

FAQ
Can I move from private label to OEM later? Yes — a hybrid path is common: launch with private-label boards while your custom mould is in development, then switch the range to your own shape for the next order cycle.
Which option is cheaper to start? Private label. You customize an existing platform (colors, graphics, packaging) with no tooling cost and no engineering phase. OEM adds mould development and engineering but gives you an exclusive shape.
Does private label mean my design is exclusive to me? Private label customizes a shared platform; other brands can select the same base shape. For a shape only you can sell, choose OEM with your own mould — we sign an NDA and your mould stays your property.
What are the MOQ differences? Co-branding runs start at 5–10 pcs on standard models. Pilot batches run 20–50 pcs; private label and standard volume runs go at 90–100+ pcs per 150 m roll; custom-mould shapes run at the volume tier depending on complexity.
